Founded in 2025, the OKC Signal Corps, known in the field as the Signal Corps, Western Detachment, is an authentic mainline living history unit devoted to bringing the story of Civil War communications to life.
Our members portray the soldiers of the U.S. Army Signal Corps who relayed critical messages across the battlefields of the 1860s using flags, torches, and field telegraphs. Whether demonstrating wig-wag signaling from a hilltop or operating a working telegraph station, we strive to recreate the ingenuity and discipline that made the Signal Corps one of the most advanced branches of its day.
The detachment welcomes new members who share an interest in accurate portrayal, history, and teamwork. We train in authentic signaling methods, field procedures, and camp life, while supporting reenactments and educational programs across the region.
However, more than anything else strive to create a family friendly experience for both our members and the public. Our focus is comradery and public education. You will see us openly educating the public about the role of the Signal Corps during the Civil War and beyond. While we may attend campaigner events at times, our focus is, while maintaining authenticity, mainline family and public events.
As a result we are highly selective who we allow to join our unit, we are looking for people of good character and integrity with clean mouths and wholesome attitudes.

Recruitment Steps
- Make sure you have read all of the recruitment information above.
- If you have not spoke with us in person, you need to fill out the contact form so we can chat. Do not go past this point until you have done so.
- Give the field manual an initial read, make sure you understand all of the bylaws and expectations of members within this organization.
- Purchase all of the required gear and uniforms. We have a spreadsheet breaking down all the necessary items here. You will not be permitted to take the field with us until you have done so. Loaner equipment is available on a limited basis. You are expected to be self-sufficient for events outside of shared meals (when planned).
- Attend and graduate from a Camp of Instruction! These are held semi-annually and are normally a single overnight activity.
